Multigenerational Housing Arrangements

There are many reasons having a multigenerational household maybe a beneficial arrangement for your family, and it’s becoming increasingly popular. To help everyone coexist peacefully, it’s helpful to create a space where everyone feels comfortable. Here are just a few things about multigenerational living that can be helpful for you:

Understand costs & financial responsibilities

Costs and financial arrangements will typically depend on the age of the family members living with you. When an adult child moves back into your home after college, you may have them pay rent. But if your mother or father moves in needing regular assistance, their finances may become your responsibility.

Set rules and boundaries

Similarly, you’ll want to set ground rules and boundaries with the family members moving into your home. For example, if you have adult children with their own families moving in, you may want to set boundaries about when you are able to babysit. For children home from college, you may create ground rules about guests or when you require “quiet time”.

Privacy is important

A critical need for family members of any age is privacy. This will be easy to offer if you can provide a secondary housing structure such as a casita or attached apartment. When you’re sharing rooms in your home, create ways to ensure that you and your family members each have private spaces and times.

Share household chores

For those able to help out around the house, communicate regularly about shared household tasks. What are they responsible for buying? Will everyone purchase their own groceries or will they be shared? Who cleans the house? Yardwork? What if the air conditioner needs repair. Try to establish specific and general guidelines to avoid misunderstandings.
