If you’re planning on doing any holiday hosting this year (whether you’re gearing up to have friends over for a low-key game night or sending out invitations for a sit-down dinner), be sure to do an audit of your living room. You will want to take a look around your space to ensure that your living room is as you want it and doesn’t contain any major design flaws that might hinder the flow, fun, or festive nature of the evening.
1. Poor Lighting!
Warm, layered lighting instantly makes a space feel inviting. Your best bet is to weave a mix of fixtures into the space. Table lamps, sconces, and floor lamps will help create more diffused light, which feels cozier.
2. Art that is hung at the wrong height…
Don’t make the mistake of hanging your living room art too high or too low, as doing so will make your space feel disjointed. The best approach is to hang art at eye level.
3. Does the room feel like a place to gather?
If you’re planning on having guests over—whether it’s 2 people or 10—take the time to ensure that your space features seating options that will encourage your visitors to relax and enjoy themselves. You should set up your seating layout in a way that encourages conversation, which can be achieved by making sure that your sofa and accent chairs are all facing in the same general direction. Guests should be able to easily see and interact with each other.
4. Where do I set my drink…
Be sure to incorporate side tables and/or a coffee table so that entertaining becomes even more practical. Guests need a landing spot for their drink or phone—within arm’s reach.
